Steering Committee November 2017
In Attendance: Mike Provard, Jessica Taylor, Mike Booth, Tessa Keough, Ann Staley, Lorilee Wagner, Janet Hovorka, Devon Noel Lee
RootsTech Contest. Devon shared the new app for conference contests. Discussion ensued about changing the domain to GBA.buzz. Signage will be labeled with Genealogy Business Alliance and prizes offered. Logos on signage is critical for branding as well. Particulars about signage size, coupons offered etc will be left to the group who signs up. $30 minimum prizes for participation. Devon will check out pricing on flyers in the bags/online advertising. Janet and Mike both agreed that flyers in the bags have been profitable. Janet and Jessica can help with online advertising if there is money available. Press Releases can be sent out, social media etc to build buzz before the conference.
Discussion ensued about who could participate in this contest. Mike Booth expressed that the draw for RootsMagic was not the email addresses, but to drive traffic at the conference. In addition, with the contest confined to a physical location, legal issues are avoided for collecting emails. It was discussed that part of the benefit was to have each company’s logo displayed on signs throughout the hall and if there are more logos, that makes it less effective and dilutes the value. Tessa Keough suggested that we try doing the contest with just companies who have booths this time and then possibly expand later.
Discussion ensued about drawing lines around the GBA membership. Jessica suggested that we have two options, GBA could become a certifying body with different levels of membership where a list could be created of participants and participants could use the GBA logo. Or GBA could mainly be a support and communication entity without drawing lines as to who is participating in the group. Much discussion ensued about the value of validation and the definition of a business. Tiered membership was considered. The group agreed that non-profit groups and conference organizers were important contributors to the group and wouldn’t fit a business definition. Tessa felt that projects won’t always serve everyone’s needs and that it should be ok to participate in a project if you fit the mold, and not if you don’t. The consensus of the group was that drawing lines in the group presented problems and at this time GBA logos should only apply to projects. In the future each project approved by the steering committee would have boundaries as to who could participate and who couldn’t upon approval and then the logo would be used for participants of the project on a temporary basis while the project was on going. Any type of business is welcome to bring a project to the steering committee for approval.
